Hazardous conditions for the auto industry

DETROIT: For the first time since 1993, automakers sold fewer than a million new cars and trucks in a single month in the United States, as a reeling economy scared people away from showrooms in September, and many eager buyers were unable to get loans.

 

With industry sales dropping 26.6 percent over all compared with a year ago, car companies are likely to cut more production and jobs to compensate for falling revenues. (Click on title to read full article)

Bloody September: Even Toyota Reports Nosedive

 

PARIS - Everything automotive glitters in the City of Lights during auto show week. As I watched Mazda put on a big show to unveil its Kiyora (pictured), a concept that hints at what a future b-segment car might look like, the U.S. auto industry was in flames. Reports from Detroit and Southern California indicate the bottom has fallen out of the market. It's not rising gas prices or the inability of old line automakers to shift roduction from SUVs to hybrids and compacts. It's the startling state of the U.S. and global economy. Wall Street is taking us down, and for as long as Congress dithers over a bailout plan, no matter how distasteful it might be, there's finally some reality behind those hyperbolic deathwatches at the more sensational of car Web sites.(Click on the title above to view more)
